LED LIGHTS SAVE ELECTRICITY

ESKOM IS GETTING MORE AND MORE EXPENSIVE

Our first mode of electric lighting was the incandescent lamp we knew as a lightbulb.

These units used between 40 and 75 watts of electricity. The next revolution was the energy saving fluorescent bulb which most people are using now. They consume from 11 to 15 watts of energy.

Now we have a new revolution” – the LED. Light emitting diode which only consumes 1 to 5watts of electricity. Imagine saving a further third of your electricity or more!

You could use two three watt LED lights over your bed for reading: really bright as they are the latest technology using SMDs, surface mounted devices.

A main light fitting only requires two LED lamps. LEDs are available to replace halogen downlighters, ordinary bulbs or energy efficient lights with bayonet or screw fittings. Imagine saving a third or fifth of your lighting consumption!

What is an LED?

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for other lighting. Introduced as a practical electronic component in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.

Light-emitting diodes are used in applications as diverse as aviation lighting, automotive lighting, advertising, general lighting, and traffic signals). LEDs have allowed new text, video displays, and sensors to be developed, while their high switching rates are also useful in advanced communications technology. Infrared LEDs are also used in the remote control units of many commercial products including televisions, DVD players, and other domestic appliances.

The latest development in LEDs are surface mounted devices which are very efficient and last up to 50,000 hours of light. Because of Eskom’s desire to save electricity, many people are replacing their lighting with LEDs.  Even though more expensive they outlast all other bulbs on the market.
